Platform limits
About this social media checker
This free social media character counter checks your post or caption against the limits of six major platforms simultaneously: Twitter / X, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube. As you type, every platform updates in real time with a progress bar showing how close you are to each limit.
Stop writing a post, publishing it, and discovering it was cut off or rejected. Check before you post — it takes seconds and saves you from losing the end of your message or looking unprofessional.
Complete platform character limits
- Twitter / X standard: 280 characters per tweet. Every character counts including spaces, punctuation, and emojis. URLs are automatically shortened to 23 characters regardless of their actual length.
- Twitter / X Premium: 25,000 characters for paid X Premium subscribers.
- LinkedIn posts: 3,000 characters maximum. Posts are truncated after 210 characters with a "see more" link on desktop, and after 140 characters on mobile.
- LinkedIn comments: 700 characters maximum.
- Instagram captions: 2,200 characters maximum. Only the first 125 characters are visible before the "more" link on most devices.
- Instagram bio: 150 characters maximum.
- TikTok captions: 2,200 characters maximum.
- TikTok bio: 150 characters maximum.
- Facebook posts: 63,206 characters — effectively unlimited for practical purposes.
- Facebook comments: 8,000 characters maximum.
- YouTube descriptions: 5,000 characters maximum. Only the first 157 characters appear in search results, so front-load your keywords.
Tips for optimal post length on each platform
- Twitter / X: Posts under 100 characters get 17 percent more engagement on average. Lead with the most important information and cut anything that is not essential.
- LinkedIn: Posts between 1,300 and 2,000 characters tend to get the most organic reach. Use short paragraphs and line breaks to improve readability on mobile.
- Instagram: Front-load the first 125 characters with your hook or call to action since that is all that shows without tapping "more". Use hashtags at the end of your caption.
- TikTok: Short captions under 150 characters perform well for most entertainment content. Longer captions work for educational content where context helps viewers understand the video.
- Facebook: Posts with 40 to 80 characters get the highest engagement despite the generous limit. Pair short text with a strong image or video for maximum reach.
- YouTube: Pack your most important keywords into the first 157 characters of your description since that is what appears in search results and suggested video previews.
